Windows Blue leak shows changes large and small

More tidbits are leaking out about the kinds of changes to expect from Windows Blue, the next big release of Microsoft's signature operating system.

In what is referred to as a prerelease version dubbed Build 9364, the Windows 8 Start screen appears with both larger and smaller Live Tile setups, increased user control over color personalization, new options in style settings, and an additional snap view to let users place apps side by side in a 50-50 arrangement, according to Tom Warren at the Verge, citing screenshots posted today to the Polish language Winforum site.

"Microsoft appears to be adding all of the necessary settings required to ensure tablet users don't have to drop to the desktop Control Panel to change things," Warren wrote.

Internet Explorer 11 also makes an appearance in the purported new build, at least in name. In addition, there are allegedly changes coming to Charms, including new "play" and screenshot options, and new options for the SkyDrive service.

A public preview of Windows Blue is expected in the next couple of months, according to Mary Jo Foley at our sister site ZDNet. And Blue isn't just the code name for the next version of Windows 8, but also for updates to Windows Phone, Windows Server, and Windows Services, Foley has said.

Other recent leaks about Windows Blue have suggested "dramatic" extensions to the touch capabilities in Windows and improvements to the speech recognition feature in Windows Phones.

Windows Blue is also expected to offer improvement's to the power efficiency of devices running the operating system.

Microsoft to support Windows Phone 7 and 8 until 2014

Microsoft is set to support both Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 until 2014, according to the company's website. The website has detailed dates for when the company is planning to halt support and cease security update rollouts (much like the Windows desktop operating system). It's a positive sign for all Windows Phone owners as their smartphones will continue to receive updates for many months to come.

Should you own a Windows hone 7.x device, you'll be eligible for security updates until September 9th, 2014. If you're running the latest version of Windows Phone, Microsoft will be wrapping up update support on July 8th, 2014. The Microsoft page detailing the support lifecycle also states the following:

"Microsoft will make updates available for the Operating System on your phone, including security updates, for a period of 18 months after the lifecycle start date. Distribution of the updates may be controlled by the mobile operator or the phone manufacturer from which you purchased your phone. Update availability will also vary by country, region, and hardware capabilities."

So what does all this mean for consumers?

You're set to receive update notifications on your Windows Phone (regardless whether it's 7.8 or 8) until 2014. Those on older hardware will have upgrade to then take advantage of future major releases, while Windows Phone 8 devices should see the next major version of Windows Phone, which will then kick off another support cycle.

As well as updates for Windows Phone 8, it's speculated that Windows Phone 7.8 isn't the end for legacy hardware. A leaked slide from a Nokia presentation (see above) shows another potential update that's set to roll out after Windows Phone 7.8. Microsoft hasn't revealed anything as-of-yet, so we'll remain hopeful that it's not the end of the road for Windows Phone 7.

Said updates are stated to be possibly under the control of mobile operators and / or hardware manufacturers. Availability may vary by country, region and hardware capabilities. With Windows Phone 8, Microsoft will be able to further take advantage of OTA (over-the-air) updates, enabling consumers to update their Windows Phones without plugging devices into computers.

Microsoft rolling out secondary Windows Phone 7.8 update (build 8862), set to fix Live Tile issue

It was only yesterday when we reported that Microsoft released an update for Windows Phone 7.8 hardware, which was believed to address the Live Tile issues consumers have been experiencing. Unfortunately this turned out to not be the case, but the company has begun rolling out another build that's confirmed to do just that.

7.10.8862.144 is the latest version, which (according to the Windows Phone website) fixes bugs many have experienced since updating to Windows Phone 7.8. We've received reports that consumers are already receiving the follow-up release. Second time lucky, folks? Let us know if you've received the update and believe the Live Tile issues are no more.

Why the Higgs boson 'God particle' matters

Scientists said Thursday that they believe they have discovered the elusive Higgs boson particle, sometimes called "the God particle," that is theorized to be a crucial building block of the universe.
It is an important development not only because it explains why sub-atomic particles have mass but also because it highlights the value of the collaborative spirit that led to its discovery.
The announcement is a step forward from July, according to Philippe DiStefano from Queens University in Kingston, Ont., when physicists working at the Large Hadron Collider near the French-Swiss border said they had found a particle that was "consistent" with the Higgs boson.
"They’re sort of pinning down the properties of the particle a bit better than they did initially," says DiStefano, an associate professor of physics and astronomy.
According to a release from the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, determining whether the discovery was in fact the Higgs boson depends on its quantum properties and how it interacts with other particles. After going through their entire data set from 2012, the results "strongly indicate" they have found the elusive particle.

Touches every other particle’

First theorized almost 50 years ago by British physicist Peter Higgs and others, the Higgs boson is the only particle yet to be observed in the Standard Model of Physics, which basically explains how the basic building blocks of matter interact.
"The Higgs field is everywhere around us, and all particles are moving in the presence of this field," said William Trischuk, a professor of physics at the University of Toronto. All these particles "interact more or less strongly with it, and they are either slowed down or not slowed down so much and that's what gives them mass."
"The heavier ones interact strongly with this field and the light ones interact very weakly with this field."
Trischuk is part of the ATLAS collaboration, which is one of two experiments seeking out the Higgs using the Large Hadron Collider.
"We hate calling it the God particle but the reason it picked that up is because it goes out and touches every other particle and gives them their property, which is their mass," Trischuk said.
Still, while the Higgs boson is fundamental to the universe itself, it's unclear what impact this discovery will have on the average person, DiStefano said.
"I don’t think that anyone can guarantee what type of outcome on any time scale," he said. "This is fundamental physics so it's hard to know in advance what, if any, of the outcomes will be."
However, other scientific breakthroughs have eventually led to tangible impacts on daily life. For example, positrons, which were discovered in the 1930s, are now used in medical scanners, DiStefano pointed out.

Gathering more data

There is more work to be done in terms of nailing down the properties of the Higgs boson.
'It shows that the theory that we have of particles and forces is basically correct'—Itay Yavin, McMaster University
For instance, Trischuk said, scientists can go further in trying to determine the mass of the particle.
Currently physicists have reported its mass to be either 125 or 126 GeV.
"In five or 10 years one of the interesting things will be, is it 125.1 or 126.3 GeV? And that may have some consequences for the predictions" throughout the world of physics.
The release from CERN also said it remains "an open question, however, whether this is the Higgs boson of the Standard Model of particle physics, or possibly the lightest of several bosons predicted in some theories that go beyond the Standard Model," according to the release from CERN.
Itay Yavin, assistant professor for theoretical particle physics at McMaster University and the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, said there are a number of particles that are nearly identical to each other except for their mass. For instance, a muon has nearly the same properties as electrons but a different mass.
It is possible that there is more than one Higgs boson, with each affecting different particles, although the Standard Model currently only allows for one.
However, the evidence so far suggests that scientists have in fact found the Higgs boson, which in turn bolsters the Standard Model, Yavin said.
"Now, scientifically, it shows that the theory that we have of particles and forces is basically correct."

Collaborative spirit

Fortunately for Higgs boson seekers, the Large Hadron Collider is currently being upgraded over the next two years so it can smash atoms together with more energy, which will help gather more data to delve deeper into the mysteries of the Higgs boson.
That higher energy allows for the detection of a possible heavier Higgs particle, if such a thing even exists, along with the one that scientists say they have discovered, Yavin said.
The discovery of the Higgs boson also points to the value of the $10-billion Large Hadron Collider and the collaborative spirit behind the massive endeavour to uncover a fundamental building block of the universe, Trischuk said.
"It was the quest for the Higgs that brought us all together over the last 15 years from five continents and [6,000] people to work together," said Trischuk.
That sentiment was echoed by Yavin.
"By collaborating, we can unlock one of deepest mysteries in nature and discover a particle that was predicted on paper some 50 or so years ago," he said. "It's really a remarkable testimony about everything that is good about the human spirit, to collaborate and to think deeply about the universe."
In terms of finally settling the question of whether scientists have discovered the Higgs boson with absolute confidence, Trischuk said that may be unlikely and that the answer, instead, might come in the form of successive approximations approaching certainty.
"But I think from here on out we're going to stop calling it a Higgs-like boson and we'll call it a Higgs boson."

Why the Nokia Lumia 920 is fantastic for filmmakers

Nokia Music isn’t just about listening to your favourite tracks. It’s also about finding new ones, too. It’s this joy of discovery, which recently ledNokia Music in association with Sundance London, to launch the Nokia Music Short Film Competition. The aim is to have filmmakers showcase the amazing, unusual and unknown music scenes in their cities.

Filmmakers need to simply upload a short 15 to 60 secs video trailerby March 21st visualizing the underground music scene in their chosen city. If their idea is picked, they’ll receive Nokia Lumia 920s and a $5,000 budget to shoot their film, plus a guaranteed a special screening at the Sundance London Film & Music Festival (2013) in April.

One person who’s already been inspired by this idea and run with it is Aaron Rogers, a filmmaker from London. Using the Nokia Lumia 920, Aaron went out to investigate the underground scene in the UK capital.

As you can see from his one-minute short film, the result was spectacular. So we hooked up to find why the Nokia Lumia 920 is so good for shooting short movies. Here’s what Aaron had to say.

Beautifully slick

“The Nokia Lumia 920 is a slick and beautifully manufactured phone. The operating system is a joy to use and its performance is exceptional. As a filmmaker the main things I need in a camera are manual control over aperture, focus and ISO plus a choice of white balance presets relevant to my environment.”

A low light delight

“I’ve taken the phone to all of the shoots that I have been involved in plus more since having the device and have tried to incorporate it into the production as if I was solely using the footage shot on the phone. I have come across some really strong aspects of the camera. The phone deals with light really well – both in low light and in bright environments. However, in the video cameras settings by default, the white balance is set to ‘AUTO’, which does cause a few issues. This is due to the phone trying too hard to adjust to the mixture of colour temperatures in the room, so in hindsight set your white balance before shooting from the selection of presets available.”

Really impressive optics

“The OIS (Optical Image Stabiliser) is really impressive. For those familiar with editing tools such as Adobe Premiere CS6 – It’s like having the ‘Warp Stabiliser’ plugin constantly turned on. The optics are really impressive for a phone. When comparing it to the iPhone 5 the colour, clarity and general look of the image far exceeds the iPhone.”

Focusing on focus

“The biggest challenge I found with the Lumia 920 is the focus. In the settings you have two options and that is to have ‘Continuous focus’ on or off. When this setting is on it does work very well at focusing on the thing most prominent in the image. However, lets say you were shooting through trees branches and you had your subject walking towards you in frame. The phone would really struggle at deciding what to focus on – the tree or the subject, and they aren’t subtle focus pulls.

So if you turned ‘Continuous focus’ off would you be able to manually focus on what you choose to? Afraid not – you then lose all ability to focus what so ever. You can’t press the shutter button half way down or even touch to focus as that initiates recording.“

A serious bit of kit for filmmakers

“Overall though the phones camera capabilities are really strong and show a big development in portable technology. I think it’s amazing how things have evolved the past 5 years. How you can now get perfectly good Full HD footage on a phone and how DSLR’s have had a massive influence on the film industry. As a whole I think the Lumia 920 is a serious bit of kit for the independent filmmaker due to how convenient it is to have a refined 1080p image in your pocket, that unless you tell someone -wouldn’t necessarily guess it was shot on a phone.”

It’s great to see that serious filmmakers are taking the Nokia Lumia 920 seriously. We’re convinced that smartphones can revolutionize filmmaking. But what about you? Is this the beginning of a whole new genre or just a cinematic flash in the pan? Lets us know your thoughts below.

Verizon’s Lumia 928 to Come in Colorful Aluminum Shell, Battle Galaxy S4

A leaked screenshot of Verizon Wireless’ inventory system suggests that the carrier’s next high-end Nokia Lumia 928 smartphone, which is rumored to include the same PureView imaging technology from rival AT&T’s Nokia Lumia 920, will come in a variety of colors. The computer terminal shows that the Lumia 928 will come in cyan, red, black, and white.

With four color options, AT&T still has an extra color in the form of yellow for the Lumia 920flagship; However, according to a leak earlier this week, Verizon’s Lumia 928 will come an aluminum shell, an upgrade from the unibody polycarbonate body that Nokia has used since the debut of the the company’s Lumia series Windows Phone.

The Lumia 928 has been known in the past by its code name of Laser.

And according to iTechPost, another upgrade from the Lumia 920 on AT&T is that the Lumia 928 is now believed to have a single LED flash along with a single Xenon flash, rather than the dual LED flash modules. Using Xenon would allow the camera to freeze motion resulting in a crisper image captured in dark environments. Additionally, Xenon flash renders colors more accurately and is believed to be brighter than LED flash technology currently employed on camera phones.

Internally, specs for the Lumia 928 will resemble that of the Lumia 920. Both devices will have a 4.5-inch 1280 X 768-pixel display. It’s unclear if the Lumia 928 will continue using the touchscreen tech that allows users to operate the touchscreen while wearing non-specialized gloves, which is a benefit to Lumia 920 owners who live in colder climates.

The Lumia 928 will also have a dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor, 2 GB RAM, and pack 4G LTE.

It’s unclear at this time, if rumor of Nokia moving to an aluminum enclosure is true, if the Lumia 928 will be able to handle wireless charging. When HTC moved to the unibody aluminum enclosure for the HTC One, the company had to forego wireless charging technology on that phone.

If all these recent rumors surrounding the Verizon Lumia 928 hold true, then the Lumia 928 may be Nokia’s most feature rich Windows Phone to date.

Additionally, it seems that Verizon may be pitting Nokia’s flagship Lumia smartphone against Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 as both devices are now rumored to be launched at the same time, or at least close to each other.

Price of Nokia Lumia 620 smartphone falls to £130

Mobile phone operator O2 has cut the price of the Nokia Lumia 620 Windows Phone 8-based smartphone down to £130 as part of its Pay & Go Easter Flash sale. It represents a saving of £20 off its suggested retail price, excludes a compulsory £10 topup and the offer ends on 3 April. Prospective customers will also be able to redeem a free dual-coloured shell.

Other features of the phone include Nokia Drive, the company’s award-winning turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, Nokia Music which allows you to stream music without limits and for free, Nokia City Lens which is an augmented reality tool allowing you to bring up information based on what you’re looking at and Cinemagraph.

s for the hardware, the Nokia Lumia 620 has a dual-core Qualcomm system-on-chip clocked at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM, 8GB onboard storage, a microSD card slot, a 3.8in 800 x 480 pixels ClearBlack display, a 5-megapixel camera with AF and HD video recording, a front facing VGA camera, Bluetooth and up to 10 hours talk time.

You do get Wi-Fi hot spot capabilities as well as 7GB storage capacity on Microsoft Skydrive
